Program Overview

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), in partnership with WorldSkills South Africa (WSZA), has officially opened applications for the WorldSkills South Africa 2027 National Competition.

This national platform offers South Africa’s top young artisans, technicians, software developers, and vocational specialists an opportunity to demonstrate their practical expertise on a national stage. Successful competitors who excel at the national level may progress to represent South Africa at the international WorldSkills competition.

Encompassing 34 distinct skills categories, the competition spans traditional artisan trades, modern Information & Communication Technologies (ICT), engineering and automation, social services, and transportation technologies.

Eligibility Criteria & Application Pathways

Candidates may apply through one of several official academic or occupational pathways:

• TVET College Students: Enrolled in NATED (N1–N6), NC(V), or occupational programmes at any public TVET college.

• Apprentices & Learners: Participating in registered artisan apprenticeships or workplace learnerships.

• University & UoT Students: Enrolled in relevant engineering, technology, computer science, or vocational degree/diploma courses.

• Technical High School & CET Students: Pursuing accredited technical or community education and training qualifications.

• Private Skills Development Providers (SDPs): Candidates enrolled in accredited occupational skills programmes.

Age Limit Requirements

Candidates must pay close attention to age eligibility rules governed by international competition standards:

• Special Age Rules: Candidates applying for Aircraft Maintenance, Mechatronics, or Water Technology must not turn 26 years of age or older during 2028.

• Standard Age Rules: For most other skills categories, candidates typically must not turn 23 years of age or older in the year of the international competition. Candidates should verify category-specific age caps on the WSZA portal prior to applying.

Candidate Application Checklist

Before submitting your entry on the official WorldSkills South Africa portal prior to 30 April 2027, ensure you have:

1. Proof of Enrollment/Apprenticeship: Certified proof of registration from your TVET college, university, employer, or training provider.

2. Identity Verification: Certified copy of your valid South African Identity Document.

3. Category Selection: Verified that your current practical field directly matches one of the 34 competition categories.

4. Age Verification: Checked the birth-year thresholds for your chosen skill category (especially for Mechatronics, Water Technology, and Aircraft Maintenance).
