Role Overview

The Shoprite Group is seeking a detail-oriented Risk Engineering Officer to join its Group Insurance Department at the Brackenfell corporate office in Cape Town.

This technical administration and compliance role is dedicated to fire prevention, detection, and suppression initiatives across Shoprite's extensive portfolio of retail stores, distribution centers, and corporate facilities.

As a Risk Engineering Officer, you will coordinate technical risk assessments, oversee safety compliance programs, and maintain critical risk registers. Operating within a high-volume FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) environment, you will work closely with internal risk engineering teams, insurance underwriters, and external technical contractors to safeguard business operations and physical assets.

Key Responsibilities & Operational Scope

• Fire Prevention & Suppression Coordination: Manage and coordinate facility fire prevention, detection, and suppression projects to ensure all installations and maintenance comply with national fire safety codes and insurance mandates.

• Thermal Imaging & Sprinkler Assessments: Schedule, track, and review thermal imaging surveys and automatic fire sprinkler system inspections to identify electrical hot spots, structural hazards, or system vulnerabilities.

• Risk Register Maintenance: Maintain and continuously update enterprise risk management registers, audit logs, and technical databases with accurate inspection findings and remediation status.

• Stakeholder & Vendor Liaison: Act as the primary administrative link between internal facility managers, external risk consultants, service providers, and insurance auditors.

• Financial & Project Documentation: Draft, verify, and process technical reports, service provider invoices, project proposals, scope definitions, and budget allocations for risk engineering projects.

• Progress Tracking & Service Level Agreements (SLAs): Schedule technical site visits, monitor contractor performance against agreed SLAs, and compile monthly executive progress reports for risk committee review.

Qualifications & Competency Profile

Education & Certification

• Essential: National Diploma or Degree in Project Management, Risk Management, Safety Management (SAMTRAC/NEBOSH), Engineering Administration, or a related field.

Professional Experience

• Project & Risk Coordination: Proven track record in project coordination, technical administration, or facilities risk support—ideally within an FMCG, industrial, retail, or commercial property environment.

• Fire Safety Knowledge: Clear foundational understanding of industrial risk engineering concepts, specifically automatic sprinkler systems, fire detection networks, and thermal imaging diagnostics.

• Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace productivity tools.
